Why the Democratic Party Has Concealed their Post-Mortem Report on the 2024 Race: An Analysis.

This move by the Democratic National Committee to block the release of its internal post-election analysis concerning the last presidential race seems shocking but not surprising. Resistant to frank assessments, the DNC operates closer to a communications shop than an electoral entity focused on building local power to secure victories.

A Culture That Avoids Dissent

Hesitant to break with the party establishment's culture demanding unity, the committee has remained within the Biden-Harris shadow all through 2025. Making public such a report would have indicated that party leaders actually want to foster open debate about the missteps which allowed the former president to return to the White House. Yet, the leadership is moving forward as if there is little to be learned following the electoral catastrophe from the last cycle.

"Here’s our North Star: does this help us win? If the answer is no, it is an unnecessary diversion from the core mission," a justification that has been offered to justify concealing the document.

Major Failures an Autopsy Would Have Addressed

An autopsy report with any value would tackle head-on certain uncomfortable matters. Among them are:

  • Electoral Disengagement: Failing to retain of millions of voters who supported the party's candidate during the previous election proved pivotal in the close 2024 election.
  • A Choice to Seek Re-election: The determined choice by a party leader to run again, alongside an extremely delayed step-aside, is viewed as denying Democratic voters of open primaries.
  • Losing Touch With the Working-Class Base: While facing rising costs, the electoral effort is criticized for accommodating elite contributors and not managing to address the role of profit-seeking.
  • A Gaza Factor: The failure to reconsider a policy position concerning the situation in Gaza allegedly caused alienating many voters, particularly among young people, Arab American communities, and Muslim Americans.
  • Losing Youth Support: Research shows a significant drop-off in votes for the candidate from voters aged 18-29.

A Record of Evasion

Choosing secrecy aligns with a longstanding habit of evading uncomfortable facts. This mirrors an episode where virtually every elected Democrat in Washington acquiesced to a sitting president's decision for running for re-election until a poor campaign event forced a change.

At the same time, large majorities of Democratic voters had been continually telling surveyors that they did not want that candidate to be the nominee.

Campaign Spending Concerns

A thorough autopsy would also examine questions regarding campaign spending, such as the amounts were directed to high-priced advisors and media firms during a campaign that managed to spend a staggering amount over a few months.

The Broader Problem

Ultimately, the blockage regarding the analysis points to a deference to party leaders that oversaw an unsuccessful presidential campaign. The implication to ordinary supporters – including millions of loyal volunteers – appears to be that they do not have a right to see the lessons the insiders have learned based on hundreds of interviews drawing from conversations with insiders.

A party unwilling to critically review its mistakes will struggle to escape the pattern that ended up being so beneficial to the rival party.
